What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is not something that only happens under specific and rare circumstances. Every one of us regularly enters and exits a state of enhanced consciousness as part of daily experiences. In some ways, it resembles daydreaming - not fully awake, not fully asleep. It can also be described as experiences produced under specific instructions, in other words, a guided fantasy.

How does hypnosis work?
When hypnotized, the mind is relaxed, yet alert. It is open and receptive to suggestions. Also known as the alpha state, the brain vibration rate slows down, giving the person under hypnosis access to the powerful Subconscious Mind. Even as the Conscious Mind is cognizant of what's going on, the Subconscious Mind readily accepts information provided by the hypnotist. Although the Subconscious mind is powerful, it has no reasoning power like the Conscious Mind. Therefore, any suggestion made by the Conscious Mind is accepted by the Subconscious Mind. But, it's not easy to reach into the Subconscious Mind. Besides being put into a trance, it is also possible to induce hypnosis in oneself by listening to hypnosis tapes under optimum conditions of relaxation and motivation.
How can hypnosis aid in self-improvement?
Hypnosis can help you empower and improve yourself through the power of positive suggestions. Although it finds application in magic shows, there's nothing magical or mysterious or sleight of the hand about hypnosis - it's all science. Since we are all influenced by suggestions and a hypnotized state is more receptive to suggestions, hypnosis uses this state of affairs to convert negative patterns of behavior into positive patterns.

What is required to induce hypnosis?
You will need to observe the following to induce hypnosis in yourself:
* Motivation - You must want to be hypnotized.
* Relaxation - You must relax to be hypnotized.

* Imagination - You must imagine that you are hypnotized.
* Suggestion - You must respond to suggestions to be hypnotized.
How common is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is more common than you think. In fact, it is being used every day. Consider a television program or film that you find really absorbing. Chances are, you were in a mild hypnotic trance. There's nothing unusual or unnatural about hypnosis, and neither is it a rarity. Advertisers use this knowledge to induce consumers to buy their products. First they put viewers in a trance through captivating television programs, then provide hypnotic suggestions through commercials. Another common occurrence of hypnosis is when you are driving down the road with your mind on some task or thought or experience. Before you know it, you have missed your turn!
Therefore, you now know that your not immune from hypnosis. You have experienced it when driving and daydreaming, you have experienced it when you were prompted to select a particular brand name over others due to the influence of advertising, you have experienced it thousands of times.

What happens when you are hypnotized?
When hypnotized, you are in the best state to change the way you live. In this state, you can remove all the mental barriers limiting your progress towards a healthier, happier life. To understand the mechanism of hypnosis, you must first understand the relationship between your conscious and subconscious minds.
The conscious mind
The conscious mind is that part of your mind that is active even as you read this. Although it constitutes only 10% of the total mental resources, it is the part that is most often used, finding application in awareness and decision-making. The conscious mind performs the following basic functions:
* It is responsible for decision-making.
* It analyzes and solves problems.
* It is the seat of willpower.
* It is the seat of working memory.
However, since the conscious mind accounts for only 10% of your total mental power, its decisions are based on the information stored in the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind, accounting for 90% of mental prowess, is the seat of your existence.
The Subconscious Mind
Your subconscious mind can be compared to a computer in that it stores the data for all the experiences you have ever had. In other words, in the same manner a computer operates only on it's programming, so does your subconscious mind. And like a computer, your subconscious mind lends itself to reprogramming.
The subconscious mind performs the following functions:
* It automatically controls bodily functions like breathing, heart beating, eyes blinking, the immune system, etc.
* It makes you creative.
* It makes you intuitive.
* It makes you emotional.
Since the subconscious mind does not analyze situations like the conscious mind, it can make you illogical and irrational. Unlike what you may believe, being irrational has its advantages too. Since it does not depend on logic, it can make you believe whatever you want to believe - that you are rich, famous, slender, happy. Since, as previously mentioned, the conscious mind is influence by the subconscious, you actually work towards realizing your beliefs. However, this can work both ways. If you have negative thoughts, you will lead a negative life in the real world as well. Therefore, if your internal voice says you are fat, a smoker, or a failure, then that is what you become.
How do we get suggestions into the subconscious mind by crossing "Critical Factor" barrier?
The Conscious Mind has something called the critical factor that acts as a guardian at the gate between the Conscious Mind and the Subconscious Mind. It can allow or bar suggestions from entering the Subconscious Mind. This is part of the body's defense mechanism. Since change often has negative connotations, any suggestions contrary to the programming of the subconscious mind is rejected. However, since the only way real change can take place is to get the new programming into the subconscious mind, you need to bypass the critical factor using your memories, habits, and emotions.
Experience creates memories. However, you may need many positive experiences to diminish the effects of any negative programming caused by a single negative experience. This makes it a time-consuming process. Habits require willpower and time in order to become habits. Emotions are often random and depend on your mind's reaction to certain situations, Changing the way you think and react is also a long drawn-out experience. In addition to these three, there's another method to bypass the critical factor - hypnosis.
During hypnosis, the critical factor becomes temporarily inactive. However, the conscious mind is active and in charge, and can reprogram the subconscious mind as desired.
